Frequently asked questions
Will CookieType slow down my store?
No. The banner script is about 13 KB compressed, has no dependencies and loads without blocking your theme from rendering. The cookie list in the preferences panel only downloads when a visitor opens it.
Do I need a developer to set this up?
No. Install from the Shopify App Store and a short setup wizard walks you through regions, layout and wording, then switches the banner on in your theme for you. There is no code to paste.
Does it work with my theme?
Yes — CookieType runs as a Shopify app embed rather than a theme edit, so it works across Online Store 2.0 themes and keeps working after you switch or update a theme.
Will it block tools I already use, like Google Ads or Meta Pixel?
It holds them back until the visitor agrees, then lets them run. Shopify's own pixels follow the Customer Privacy API automatically; Google (via Consent Mode v2), Meta, TikTok, Klaviyo and Microsoft are connected from the app. Any other script can be tagged with a consent category so it waits too.
How does it know which rules apply to a visitor?
With geotargeting (Pro), each visitor is matched to their country — and in the US, their state — and sees the rules for that region: GDPR in the EU, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA in California, LGPD in Brazil and more. Visitors who can't be located get the strictest, opt-in rules. On the Free plan every visitor gets one opt-in banner, which meets the strictest laws everywhere.
What happens when a privacy law changes?
We track changes to the laws we support and update the rules behind the app. You get an email when a change affects the regions you sell to, so you can see what moved and why — on every plan, including Free.
Can I match the banner to my store's branding?
Yes. Choose a box, bar or centred window, then set colours (or pull them from your theme), button shape, font and wording. A live preview shows the result on desktop and mobile before you publish, and a contrast check warns you if text becomes hard to read.
What if I don't set up a cookie banner at all?
Under GDPR and similar laws, setting non-essential cookies without consent can expose you to complaints and fines. Google also requires Consent Mode for ads shown to visitors in the EEA and UK, so a missing banner can affect your ad measurement too.
Who can see my visitors' consent records?
Only you. Records are tied to your store and we do not sell or share them. Each one shows what was agreed to, when and in which region — without storing IP addresses. On Pro you can export them as CSV.
What if I get stuck during setup?
Support is included on every plan, free ones as well. The help center walks through setup step by step, and you can reach a person from inside the app — we usually reply within one working day.
