How geotargeting works

Show each visitor the banner and consent rules for their own country or US state, or one strict opt-in banner to everyone on the Free plan.

Updated

With Smart Geotargeting on, each visitor is matched to a region by their country, and in the United States by their state, the moment the page loads. They then see the banner and consent rules for that region only — an opt-out banner in Texas, an opt-in banner in Germany.

  • Visitors are matched from the most specific region to the least: state, then country, then Worldwide.
  • A visitor whose location can't be worked out gets the strictest, opt-in rules. It never falls back to the more relaxed option.
  • You can fine-tune which countries or states belong to a region on the Regions tab.

Without geotargeting

Geotargeting is part of Pro. On the Free plan, or with it switched off, every visitor sees the same banner under opt-in rules — the safest single setting, because it meets the strictest laws everywhere.
